Click here for CD liner. On When Time Approaches, the Goldberg/Allen quartet is featured on their second recording. They are a young group of musicians playing original tunes in a straightforward yet decidedly mature manner. Goldberg has a smooth, flowing delivery on tenor. He allows his lyrical style to dominate much of his playing, giving the recording an even temper while establishing an agreeable mood. Guitarist Allen is typically a driving force with the group, but he is also capable of setting a melodic mood. His gentle side emerges with the Latin beat of "Someday Summer Day," while he shows more aggression and force on many of the other tunes. The two leaders contributed five tunes each. On balance, Goldberg's songs lean more to the romantic side, while Allen's have more of an upbeat posture.

The drumming of Nussbaum adds considerably to the enjoyment of this recording. He inserts very diversified and complementary rhythm patterns that swirl beneath the two leaders to push them forward. He is able to stretch out often behind the soloists and provides motive power to the group. Feiszli is a steady force on bass. His solos are limited, but he is always felt just beneath the surface. Goldberg switches to soprano on one tune and adeptly manages the straight horn without resorting to the overly saccharine sound of many young players. He and Allen put forth a solid effort on this date. It highlights their talents as writers and players quite nicely
