The Surf come out of the same Athens, Georgia scene that produced Pylon, the B52's, R.E.M. and others. This new MP3-only single from their upcoming Lost Cat Records release "Lemontrees" features the classic Surf sound updated for 2003. Think power pop in the vein of Elvis Costello, the Police and the Squeeze -- by way of the Athens party scene and therefore, inescapably, R.E.M. (or is it the other way around?). Nice retro-sounding guitar and harmony vocal interplay (you remember harmony, don't you?). So think of the Beatles, too. This could easily fit alongside the Surf's "Star Search" (you remember "Star Search," don't you?) classic "Dance of the 80's" -- or just as easily sound like the hot new Williamsburg (that's Brooklyn) band everybody's raving about. Good music never goes out of style, and this is good music.
